Requirements

Innovative Project:
Researchers who have an innovative project or would like to get involved in one of the on-going innovative projects at Arecibo Observatory and want to move to Arecibo to use the radio telescope to advance their science.

Visas:
Post-Doctoral Researchers at AO must possess a valid United States non-immigrant, work authorized immigration status that permits training or employment. Most foreign nationals in the Program are found under visa classification: J1

English Proficiency:
All Post-Doctoral Researchers at AO must be proficient in the use and understanding of spoken and written English.

Health Insurance:
The program covers health insurance.


How to Apply
Submit a scientific project that needs the Arecibo telescope or any instrumentation in the facility. The project will have to include a timeline and milestones that will help evaluate the development and success of the proposed work. Eligibility

The AO Post-Doctoral Research Program is intended for scientists in the calendar year nomination.

*Exceptions may be made for an interruption in career progression due to family or military service.


Benefits

Financial Support:

  • The Program will support two (2) postdocs under the supervision of the researcher.
  • The College of Graduate Studies at University of Central Florida provides matching support for salary and benefits for two (2) years and an additional (UCF) $5,000 for travel/research allowance for each Post-Doc.
  • The award will provide travel funds to attend several national or international conferences.
  • The Program includes 100 hours of observations, valued at $300K.
Also, the Research Development team in the Office of Research at UCF will help develop research opportunities and find funding for innovative projects. Training in the use of a variety of funding tools, assistance with internal program submissions, conduct workshops related to proposal development, and pre-award advisement and proposal development assistance will be provided.

Direction & Support

The AO Director will approve the appointment and will provide general guidance for effective operation. This program operates under the direction of the AO Director and will support the establishment of the Post-Doctoral researcher and his/her team in AO and/ or help him/her to create one.

Evaluation Method

To determine if you are qualified for the Arecibo Observatory’s Post-Doctoral Research Program, a review of your curriculum vitae and supporting documentation may be made and compared against your responses to the application questionnaire. We will verify your qualifications through quality review, interview questions, work samples, publications, among others. A proposed research plan/proposal must be submitted along with your application. This research plan is limited to three (3) pages. Please note, that three (3) letter of reference will be requested during the application process. Review of applications will begin September 1, 2020.
